Mark Teixeira Leaves Game After Hit By Pitch

Baltimore Orioles starter Jeremy Guthrie beaned Mark Teixeira on the right elbow with a wild pitch in the second inning of the Yankees’ 11-7 victory yesterday.

Teixeira threw down his helmet and tromped around before walking off the field with trainer Steve Donohue. The Yankees said Teixeira sustained a right elbow contusion and would be re-evaluated Tuesday.

Tim Johnson, the Orioles team physician, examined Teixeira, who did not go for X-rays.

“It looks pretty nasty,” said Teixeira, who expects to be out a couple of days. “Tomorrow is going to be a very long treatment day.”

Joba Chamberlain Won’t Start

joba chamberlainThe long term role for Joba Chamberlain and the New York Yankees is still yet to be determined.

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman on Sunday didn’t commit to or rule out Chamberlain getting an opportunity to be in the rotation next season. Chamberlain, who Cashman called a starter in the bullpen, was transferred into a role as a reliever on Thursday when he lost his spot to Phil Hughes in the competition for the fifth starter.

Cashman said his focus is on this season and that there have been no meetings on Chamberlain‘s status for 2011.

Chamberlain, who threw a scoreless inning out of the bullpen on Friday, said he is taking things day by day and that it would be unfair to his teammates to look past this season.
