The New York Yankees have confirmed that owner George Steinbrenner is dead, at the age of 80.

The New York Daily News, citing a Yankees team source, said Steinbrenner died at about 6:30 a.m. ET today in Florida after suffering a massive heart attack last night.

Words to remember Steinbrenner by

Tell us: Was Steinbrenner greatest owner ever?

A family statement said: “It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing. He passed away this morning in Tampa, Fla., at age 80.”

WABC reported Steinbrenner suffered a massive heart attack last night and was rushed to St. Joseph’s hospital in Tampa.

Steinbrenner last week told the AP he was “feeling good” after spending a couple hours in his office at the Yankees’ spring training complex.

During Steinbrenner’s ownership, the Yankees have won 11 pennants and seven World Series.

The Yankees website is acknowledging that there are reports about Steinbrenner suffering a heart attack, but makes no further comment, as of 9:55 a.m. ET.

When Steinbrenner celebrated his 80th birthday on July 4 at his home in Tampa, he said in a press release through his spokesman Howard J. Rubenstein:

“I want to thank everyone who has sent their good wishes. I am very fortunate to have the love and support of a great family and many, many friends. The Yankees and their fans are a large part of what keeps me going. It means a lot. And I remind everyone that the Fourth of July is also the birthday of our country. We are all lucky to be Americans.”

Steinbrenner will be remembered for many things. Among them:

He hired — and fired — Billy Martin for five separate managerial stints. He also made a Miller Lite commercial with his favorite manager.

His five-year, $3 million contract with Reggie Jackson in 1977 ushered in the era of big-time free agency money, and proved worth it when Jackson went on to earn the name of Mr. October.

During the 1981 World Series Steinbrenner contended he had broken his hand while punching out two abusive Dodgers fans. Those alleged fans never were found, and it was widely suspected that The Boss had injured himself by punching an elevator wall because he was angry about a Yankees loss.

When Dave Winfield failed to produce significantly for the Yankees, Steinbrenner belittled him as Mr. May. In 1990 he was suspended for life — but late reinstated — for hiring someone to dig up dirt on Winfield.

His failing health became obvious at the 2008 All-Star game at Yankee Stadium, when Steinbrenner was driven onto the field in a golf cart. He met with former players and broke into tears. Later that year, he gave control of the team to his sons.—USA today

World Series tickets for the 2009 baseball season can now be purchased online through many different vendors.

Today was the first day that the tickets were available, but many fans of the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies were disappointed when they showed up to their team’s stadium box office, only to be turned away. That is right. The tickets for the World Series are currently only available online.

This morning at 10:00 am, yankees.com automatically directed visitors to ticketmaster, where they were able to purchase tickets. However, by 10:07 am, the tickets were all sold out!

Many Yankee fans were very upset, especially those that lined up outside the box office early in the morning, only to be turned away at 9:00 am when the office opened.

Tickets can still be had, but they are only available through private online vendors, and they will cost an arm and a leg to get them.

ESPN news anchor and analyst Steve Phillips and 22-year-old production assistant Brooke Hundley have been secretly having an affair behind the back of Marni Phillips, Steve’s wife.

Many reports show that the previous New York Mets manager, Steve Phillips, was having an affair with Hundley, who sent Phillips’ wife Marni a letter describing their relationship — and a birthmark Phillips has on his crotch — after Phillips ended their relationship.

The story is full of scandalous details: Hundley crashed her car into Phillips’ home after dropping off the letter; she may have impersonated a 16-year-old to chat with Phillips’ son online; Marni Phillips has since filed for divorce.

ESPN has dealt out a punishment to Phillips and he will be suspended from the network for a week.

The show will be 120 minute via satellite radio. It is expected to be one of the most listened to shows for the upcoming month. What better person could they have host a call in show about baseball? Reggie Jackson knows almost everything there is to know about the game.

It should be an interesting show to tune into. I know I will listen to baseball talk from anyone that has five World Series Rings.
ANAHEIM – Yankee Stadium went out with a whimper last fall, closing its doors before the postseason began. Its successor won’t have that same fate in its inaugural season.

The Yankees celebrated clinching a spot in the postseason after a thrilling 6-5 win over the Angels, a berth they earned when Texas lost earlier Tuesday night.

They still have some work to do in order to wrap up the AL East title, but no matter what happens over the final 12 days of the regular season, playoff baseball will be returning to the Bronx next month after a one-year hiatus. “I think there was a bad taste last September in our mouth, not going to the postseason,” Joe Girardi said. “This group came together very quickly as a team. They spent a lot of time investing in each other in the offseason and in spring training, and they got very close.”

The Yankees actually clinched long before their game went final, as they were batting in the eighth inning when the out-of-town scoreboard at Angel Stadium flashed the final from Oakland, officially putting the Bombers in the postseason for the 14thtime in the past 15 years.

The lead over the Red Sox grew to six games, thanks to Boston’s loss in Kansas City, reducing the Yankees’ magic number for the division crown to six. The Red Sox lead the Rangers by seven games in the wild-card race.

Alex Rodriguez – who hit a two-run homer earlier in the game to help build a five-run lead – hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth to snap a tie game. Mariano Rivera pitched a scoreless ninth, notching his 41st save.

The New York Yankees picked up a game in the race for home-field advantage in the AL, moving 5-1/2games in front of the Angels. The win was the Bombers’ first in five tries at Angel Stadium, a place they may have to visit again next month in the playoffs.

“This has been a tough place for us, so winning out here is important,” Girardi said before the game. “And getting back to winning series, because we haven’t done that since Tampa. It’s been a while since we’ve been in a stretch like that.”

A.J. Burnett has a chance to lift the Yankees to their first series win in Anaheim since 2004, taking on Scott Kazmir this afternoon in the finale of the three-game set.

A-Rod and Jorge Posada each drilled two-run homers in the third inning – Rodriguez hitting his on a 3-0 pitch from Ervin Santana – giving the Bombers a 4-0lead. Hideki Matsui added a solo shot in the fifth.

Chad Gaudin eased his way through the Angels lineup over the first four frames, holding it to three hits and a walk, allowing only one runner to advance beyond first base. After getting two quick outs in the fifth, Gaudin needed only one more to qualify for the victory, but he never got it.

And will someone answer why in the world Big Papi Ortiz was wearing chick sunglasses? Get a life. Oh, and while your at it, you are suspended for the rest of the year for your hypocritical remarks that you made earlier.
